& who are we talking about tonight?

Night – Carol Ann Duffy

In the fifty year night,

These are the words that crawl out of the wall:

Suffer. Monster. Burn in hell

When morning comes,

I will finally tell

Amen

Well it’s no secret who she is, every secondary student share something with her via the vivid analysis of her creativity. She has managed to touch many people through her words, through twenty eight simple words. It’s strange the euphoria we feel after reading something that leaves an impact within one moment.

The introduction starts with a character who is aged fifty and compares their life to the night suggesting their life has sped too quickly. Duffy sets the time and duration within the description allowing us to reflect our own life and ponder what it entails.

The second line displays the reality of Duffy’s mind, curiosity. A metaphor of negativity explains how she views life. She uses crawl to imitate the slow motion of words creeping out, hence the reality of age catching up.

The next line suggests the personality Duffy describes, they should suffer, they are the monster and they will now burn in hell as their time is slowly approaching. When morning comes, meaning the character will know if they are yet to live another day; expecting their hell will be coming soon.
