Lise Meitner was an Austrian physicist who had fought challenges including sexism, credibility in her work and volunteered her services of being a nurse during world war one.
Her work goes on to discovering new elements which became of interest to other higher forces of authority. Meitner and other scientists were invited to a conference in America discussing on chemical reactions and the impact of this. It was soon recognised, any information released, could be used by the government in a negative light; Meitner protested and claimed, “I will have nothing to do with a bomb”. Regardless her research led to the production of the atom bomb dropped at Hiroshima, Japan.
Now the question we inquire is how? She is a woman whose research intended on the good for humanity, why is she socially labelled as the mother of the atomic bomb? Even Albert Einstein recognised her talents, “Our Marie Curie”; it’s ironic, Curie’s future led to her recognition of killing the nation yet her work led to a charity established after her. What is it about Meitner that embodies a tragedy to her name?
But know one thing, like all unsung heroes her heart intention was good.
